aldborough church, boroughbridge

Harrogate Borough Council commissioned Moor & Valley with a specialist restoration project one of the oldest churches in North Yorkshire. It required taking down and rebuilding a roman red brick wall with lime mortar and every brick had to be cleaned by hand!

Some of wall was so old it was made of cobbles at the bottom section. This had to be restored and rebuilt and two foot of red brick was added on top. As the wall was also retaining the land of the graveyard, special care had to be taken not to disturb it.

Due to the site being alongside a main road and open to the public the site had to be fenced off with site fencing and all the proper signage used.

Harrogate Borough Council required Moor & Valley to reinstate a red brick wall at Ripon cemetery, but this was no ordinary job! The site was of extreme importance due to it being a natural breeding ground for greater crested and common newts.

The council even employed a naturalist to advise the job because of its sensitive nature.

Each red brick had to be removed and cleaned by hand, then all the bricks had to be placed on pallets to prevent the newts hibernating inside the stacks. When rebuilding the wall commenced on the bottom two courses, gaps had to be left for the newts to hibernate in the wall cavities. Moor & Valley were commended by the naturalist for the care and consideration taken over the site throughout the course of the project.

Traditional lime and mortar were used in laying and creating this attractive paved area reaching from the hall to the bottom of the front gardens. The paving had to be in keeping with the traditional look of the hall and its surroundings.
